SPECIAL TOPICS: CURRICULUM ANALYSIS PRACTICUM IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS – SCED 670
COURSE REQUIREMENT # 2
Examination of a Curriculum Theorist Or Major Contributor to Curriculum
Write a paper in which you thoroughly examine the works of a curricular theorist or one major contributor in the curriculum field and identify the impact that the individual has had or might have on your work, or that of your school. Use the following guidelines for the person that you have selected.
• Choose one curriculum theorist or a major curriculum contributor from the attached handout entitled “SELECTED CURRICULUM THEORISTS OR CONTRIBUTORS ASSOCIATED WITH CURRICULUM ORIENTATIONS” – categorized by Sue Rathbone and Ron Thomas
• Carefully reread the article entitled “Perspectives on Four Curriculum Traditions” by William H. Schubert (pages 15-19) from your curriculum textbook as a vital resource for completing this requirement.
• Choose at least two professional journal articles or two websites of your choice that feature a study of your curriculum contributor.
• Read any text articles or text essays that are included in your required textbook, Curricular Planning – A Contemporary Approach that will broaden your examination of this person. Use appropriate citations and/or references from these textbook articles in your final summary if they are appropriate for your study.
• Describe the theorist’s ideas and themes in relation to his/her particular curricular orientation.
• Explore how this theorist may or may not have addressed any of the four bases of the curriculum (i.e. social forces, human development, learning – learning styles, and the nature of knowledge).
• Describe the ideas and themes of the individual that resonate true to you based on the research you have done and based on your own professional experiences.
• Describe how the themes and ideas of this person might become even more influential in your work in the future (or why they will not be), based on your more complete knowledge of the individual.
• Identify the specific ways you will (or already do) incorporate in your teaching some of the ideas and themes of this theorist.
• Write your final summary in approximately 3 to 5 pages in length, written in third person; use double-spacing with a 12 point font. Include a final reference page listing professional journal articles, textbook readings, and/or website resources that were used in your examination. Make an attempt to adhere to the American Association’s (APA) style and format for writing formal papers.
